Turism

The Department of Festivals has as its main objective the promotion of participation in the various cultural and recreational events held throughout the year in the various parishes and nuclei of our municipality, by organizing and supporting the various festivals committee.

For this, he collaborates and make different programs to carry out the different parties that chronologically begin at Christmas with the King’s Cavalcade, the Carnival, Easter holiday, as well as the popular and patronal festivities that are organized in the different neighborhoods.

The traditional King’s Cavalcade is celebrated on January 5th, with a procession of floats and their entourage that goes through the different streets of the municipality.

The Carnival have had a great reception in recent years and the most important momento now is the event organized, with the collaboration of pubs and clubs in the entertainment área, in which the participation is notorious and is increasing, where different procession of floats form groups of friends delight us with their costumes and shows on the stage created for the occasion. Also is celebrated the burial of the sardine in Portonovo, the burial of the goat in Vilalonga, which marks the end of festive events related to this festival.

Culture Department also collaborates with the festivity FESTIVITYs in the different parishes, taking as reference the patronal festivities of each of them through grants.

Among that festivities include:

RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS

The festivities in Sanxenxo are mostly pilgrimages, which are a characteristic type of festival that combines the religiosity (mass accompanied by a procession) with the profane party (verbena, outdoor canteens, folklore –“gaiteiros and muiñeiras”-, etc.)

To these pilgrimages traditionally went the parishioners looking for some favor, by which they offered to the saint some gift, as animals, eggs, alms, or figures usually wax figures, whose auction contributes to the maintenance of the temple.

Another characteristic of the Sanxenxo festivities is the powerful palenque bombs which profusely sounds during all day reminding to all the neighbors, visitors and neighbors of nearby towns, that there is a party in the different parishes that make up our municipality, while serving to honor the saint.

The fireworks performs a similar task, stand out mostly the festive carácter of the FESTIVITY that is being celebrated. In our municipality fireworks are thrown in San Roque festivity, in Portonovo on August 16th and in Santa Rosalía in Sanxenxo on September 4th.

The “muñeira”, bagpipes music, the “pulpeiras” (women who cooks octopus), the “rosquilleras”.. are many others traditional survivals that still form part of an important part of our municipality festivities.
